April 30, 2009 Joanne Silver was decorated Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes académiques. This award of the French government, equivalent to knighthood and established by Napoleon Bonaparte, recognizes outstanding scholarship and achievement in promoting French culture and language. The Ambassador of France to the United States Pierre Vimont conferred the award at a ceremony at the Philadelphia Art Alliance. Honorary guests included Catherine Pétillon, Education Attachée at the Embassy in Washington DC, and Michael Scullin, Esq., Honorary Consul of France in Philadelphia.
